What is EI?

About Genos Emotional Intelligence

The Genos model and measure of Emotional Intelligence (EI) was developed by Dr Ben Palmer and Professor Con Stough, at Swinburne University of Technology. It was the first Emotional Intelligence assessment instrument developed specifically for the workplace. It provides an in-depth assessment of individual, team and organisational Emotional Intelligence.

Genos EI Facts

The Genos EI Assessment Scale (Genos EI) is a workplace specific and behaviour-based measure of EI that:

  • consists of 70 items
  • takes approximately 15 minutes to complete
  • is available in Self and Multi-Rater formats
  • is supplemented by multiple assessment reports that include targeted development suggestions
  • is supported by comprehensive EI-enhancement materials, and
  • has applications in employee development, as well as recruitment and transition.

The Genos EI model and measure assesses seven skills that define how effectively people perceive, understand, reason with and manage both their own and others’ emotions. Drawing from Salovey and Mayer’s (1990) original conceptualisation of EI, Genos EI shows that in the workplace, as with other areas of life, moods, feelings and emotions influence people’s thoughts, decisions, behaviour and ultimately performance.

Genos EI model was constructed as a result of a large factor analytic study of other models and measures of EI and represents a psychometrically robust taxonomy of the EI construct (Palmer, Gignac, Ekermans & Stough, in press). The Genos EI Assessment Scale achieves the ‘gold-standard’ for psychological assessment construction as it:

  • has numerous peer reviewed academic publications attesting to its validity
  • possesses excellent face validity and internal reliability, and
  • shows minimal overlap with non-EI measures suggesting that Genos EI adds further power over-and-above other existing measures of workplace performance.

Genos EI measures the outcome of more effective EI, according to the seven skills presented in the diagram below. This is because people’s outward displays and behaviours at work have the most impact on their performance.
